Swine Flu: The' Pandemic' That Ended With A Whimper

So that's it. The swine flu pandemic of 2009 is over. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has acknowledged that the pandemic "may have peaked in parts of the northern hemisphere". There has been no "pandemic", in any clinically relevant sense of the term, anywhere in the world since swine flu first broke out in Mexico last April. How was it that a wholly "novel" virus turned out on closer inspection not to be so novel at all? If it turns out that we have used a sledgehammer to crack a nut, my question is this: how did the virologists get the scale of the threat so wrong?

GP leaders have admitted to growing concern over a draining of enthusiasm for the swine flu vaccination programme, with figures showing it is being widely snubbed by patients and healthcare workers alike. Many patients are losing enthusiasm for the swine flu campaign as the number of cases drops – with a 52% fall last week – and evidence grows of how mild the illness is for most patients. Practices are struggling to persuade patients in at-risk groups to come forward after a ‘striking reduction’ in the number of cases and the revelation many children have already had the virus without even knowing it. Dr Peter Holden, GPC negotiator on swine flu admitted the low uptake among healthcare workers was a concern. ‘It's important people are vaccinated," he said.
